There’s a moment in the movie Voicemails for Isabelle when its star, Zoey Deutch, explains how she wants to meet someone special. “I have this fantasy that someone’s gonna come and sit down next to me,” she says. “We lock eyes, and it happens.”
It’s hard not to feel that same kind of magic whenever you sit down to watch one of her movies or shows. Deutch — the younger daughter of Pretty in Pink director Howard Deutch and Back to the Future actor Lea Thompson — has been charming audiences since the early 2010s, with roles in shows like The Suite Life on Deck and Ringer.
Since then, Deutch has stolen scenes in political satires, crime thrillers, time-loop movies, and post-apocalyptic comedies. In Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague, filmed in black and white, her vibrant and sparkling performance earned her an Independent Spirit Award nomination. And between her roles in Set It Up, Something from Tiffany's, and Voicemails for Isabelle, she has quickly become the leading lady of the romantic comedy. (Her parents, who met while working on Some Kind of Wonderful, should be proud.)

In 1960, Jean-Luc Godard debuted his movie Breathless, which is now considered the starting point of the French New Wave art film movement. Nouvelle Vague reimagines the making of that revolutionary film, with Guillaume Marbeck portraying Godard and Aubry Dullin and Deutch playing Breathless actors Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg, respectively. A love letter to creative imagination and experimentation from Richard Linklater (Hit Man), the black-and-white title also includes portrayals of influential film figures like François Truffaut, Agnès Varda, and Éric Rohmer.
Meet Leonard Burling, a British tailor in 1950s Chicago whose clientele includes the region’s vicious gangsters. He must thread a very dangerous needle when his shop becomes a battleground for a potentially deadly whodunit. Deutch plays Mable Shaun, the shop assistant who is also dating the mob boss’ son (Dylan O'Brien) and makes moves to accomplish her own agenda. Johnny Flynn and Simon Russell Beale are also in the crime thriller, the entirety of which takes place inside the shop.
This satire stars Ben Platt as Payton Hobart, a teen who dreams of one day becoming the President of the United States — but first must navigate the treacherous political landscape of his Santa Barbara high school. To get elected student body president, he convinces Infinity Jackson, a sick classmate played by Deutch, to be his running mate. Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Lange, David Corenswet, Bob Balaban, and Bette Midler also appear in the series, which sees Payton eyeing a seat in the Senate in Season 2.
Deutch stars in this romantic comedy as Harper who, like Charlie (Glen Powell), is an exhausted New York City assistant who wishes her workaholic boss would get off her back. They strategically arrange a meet-cute between their demanding employers — Kirsten (Lucy Liu), the icy editor of a sports journalism empire, and Rick (Taye Diggs), a high-strung venture capitalist. But Harper and Charlie soon find that matchmaking is practically its own full-time job, and that means spending a lot of time together (hint, hint).
In this raunchy dramedy, Connor (Jonah Hauer-King) has always had a crush on Olivia, an impulsive and noncommittal waitress played by Deutch. The two momentarily reunite at a wedding, but sparks don’t fly until Olivia runs into Connor as he’s hitting on a stranger named Jenny (Ruby Cruz), who’s been stood up by her date. The trio partake in the titular activity, and it’s practically Connor’s ultimate fantasy. But the reality of their carefree night resurfaces — with unexpected consequences.
Deutch stars in this romantic dramedy as Jill, a San Francisco chef who continues to grieve her late sister by leaving her messages about everything that’s going on in her life. That phone number, however, has since been reassigned to Wes (Nick Robinson), an Austin real estate agent who can’t stop listening to her hilarious confessions. Might he be falling in love with her from afar? Nick Offerman, Lukas Gage, and Harry Shum Jr. are also in the cast of the heartfelt film, written and directed by Leah McKendrick.
The original Zombieland stars Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin as clever survivors of a zombie apocalypse. This sequel, released 10 years later, sees the foursome splintered and chasing each other across the country, encountering fellow outlasters along the way. Those survivors include Deutch as Madison, a ditzy girl who has managed to evade the undead by hiding out in a mall — specifically, in a Pinkberry — since the crisis began when she was 14. Her strategy for eluding zombies: "Mostly stay in the freezer."
